1. Heart or cardiovascular conditions
Mescaline can increase heart rate and blood pressure.
People with:
- hypertension
- heart disease
- arrhythmias
- history of stroke
are at higher risk of complications.
2. Psychiatric conditions
Psychoactive substances may worsen certain mental health disorders. Risk is higher for people with:
- schizophrenia
- psychosis or a history of psychotic episodes
- bipolar disorder (especially mania risk)
- severe anxiety disorders
- borderline personality disorder
There is increased risk of triggering or worsening symptoms.
3. Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Mescaline and similar substances may pose unknown or harmful effects on fetal development.
Contraindicated during:
- pregnancy
- breastfeeding
4. Medication interactions
There are significant risks when combining mescaline-containing plants with certain medication classes. These include:
- SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants
(risk of dangerous interactions such as serotonin syndrome) - Antipsychotic medication
- Stimulants (ADHD medication, amphetamines)
- Blood pressure medications
- Benzodiazepines (may blunt or unpredictably alter effects)
- Any substance affecting serotonin, dopamine, or blood pressure presents potential danger.
5. Epilepsy or seizure disorders
Psychoactive compounds may increase the risk of seizures in susceptible individuals.
6. Gastrointestinal or liver conditions
Mescaline is processed by the liver and can cause nausea, vomiting, and stress on the digestive system.
People with:
- liver disease
- severe gastrointestinal disorders
may be at higher risk of complications.
